Membership Retention
It seems that we have had several memberships expire over the last few months. I found a well written article that I would like to share.

If you read the monthly articles in this newsletter, then you know that retention is a key component to the health and well-being of our lodge; in fact you are probably sick of hearing about it. However, every month, despite our best efforts, we lose members at the end of each month. And not just one or two, it is usually 8 or 10, often times more. And we have to ask ourselves - Why?

A survey was done last year asking members why they let their membership in the Moose lapse. Rather than bore you with a long list of statistics, let's look at the top five reasons.

1. NEVER INTENDED TO JOIN - these members did so as a favor for a friend. Maybe that friend was trying to reach his 5-Club or 25-Club status, or trying to sign one more member than his rival. It is always a good thing to sponsor someone into the Moose, but once you do, your job is not over. You need to try to get that new enrollee to attend an orientation or enrollment so he/she can see what we are all about; you need to invite them to lodge functions and introduce them to others and make them feel welcome, as though they are a part of a family.

2. TOO OLD OR SICK - This is one where the lodge can help, and we do. If we know someone is in a nursing home, or has been suffering financial hardship due to prolonged illness, we have paid for their membership so that we do not lose them as members. So if you know of someone who is in a nursing home for an extended period of time, or is hurting financially due to illness, let us know and we will look into paying his or her dues.

3. MOVED, NO LODGE IN AREA - This is a tough one, and one we hear all the time. What we try to explain is that their membership card is good in ANY lodge. If they travel, they can stop in and visit ANYWHERE there is a Moose Lodge. Their membership benefits will also always be in effect as long as they pay their dues - they can save money on travel, hotels, shopping, prescriptions, insurance, the list goes on and on. So if you know someone who has moved and is thinking of not renewing, please remind them of all of these things.

4. CAN'T AFFORD IT - This often relates to item number 2; financial hardship due to illness or confinement to a nursing home where they only get a few dollars per month spending allowance. The answer is the same - we can help them out by offering to pay their dues.

5. DID NOT FEEL WELCOME, UNFRIENDLY, FELT IGNORED - This is an area where we can definitely make a difference, and each of us can help. It is a part of the board of officers' responsibility to welcome new members (and old members too) whenever they see them in the lodge; but it is something each member can also do. We all know what it's like to be ignored - ever go into a store or place of business and have no one ask if they can assist you? Makes you mad doesn't it? And how likely are you to go back to that business?

Not only are we a business that should welcome our customers, we are a family that should welcome in brothers and sisters. A simple smile and a handshake will make all the difference in the world as to whether a member returns to our lodge or not.

And finally, a very large percentage of those surveyed said they either never went or seldom went
to their lodge. Those that never went were probably never invited by their sponsor. We need to get them in the FRONT DOOR and show them a good time and keep them form walking out the BACK DOOR.

Those that seldom went could have been for any of the reasons listed above, and any on of those we can fix. We really do need to make sure our lodges are the Friendliest Places in Town; we need to focus on Community Service; to give our members something to be proud to be a part of; we need to have Family Activities so that our younger members can participate and have a place to bring their families, not to mention saving the expense of a babysitter; we need a place where our older members can sit and relax without being bombarded by loud music, rowdy behavior, and disrespect. We need to get the word out to our members about all our great humanitarian endeavors; show them the good things each of us do for Mooseheart, Moosehaven, and our communities.

Maybe then, our retention numbers will improve.
